Now, these aren’t going to be Reviews. I’m no Yelp. These posts will be more like diary entries, without the drama and the heartache. (but maybe a little heartburn)

So, if my favorite things sound interesting (or at least better than listening to your boss complain about sales), stay tuned!

why, dear lord, why?!?

Dear Man full of tattoos,

Let me just be frank: this frightens me. Not because it’s scary. But rather, because of the permanency of such a drastic action. Why, I ask you, WHY would you do this to yourself?! What sort of satisfaction do you derive from achieving this full-body experience? There is no mistake, its a beautiful portrait, full of color and excitement, I don’t know where to put my eyes next… so much to see! Wait, is that hair I see in the crack of your bum? Oh my.

Now, I’m not trying to judge you. You have every right to do to your body what you see fit. I only ask you these probing questions out of fear that you will someday regret such a drastic display of art. Will you still feel such a loving affection towards a full canvas that will have undoubtedly, er, stretched and aged? Will you not look back and think “gee, maybe I should have gone with something bit smaller, or perhaps a bit less permanent.”

Let me take this handy opportunity to add a little plug for my business, which may have helped you express yourself a bit more enterchangably. I love to read Inc. Magazine. I almost crave a new issue each month. Its full of inspiring, thought provoking experiences brought to us by real, live movers and shakers. I just finished an editorial by Roger Berkowitz, CEO of Legal Sea Foods. In it he talks about his typical day, how he stays focused and centered, and how he works to keep Legal on the top of its game. At the very end he talks about going to dinner with his wife at Restaurants other than his own. He says “if they do something great with food and service, I’ll shoot an email to myself or to someone on staff. If the food or the service is bad, I never complain. I just sit back and enjoy it.” I had to laugh, out loud in fact. What a great approach. We can apply this to any business we run. It really is enjoyable to see the competition fail, or at least fall behind our standards.

I’ll be back in the Restaurant business someday, no doubt. Its in my blood. It feels natural. But in the mean time, I’m going to learn all I can from anyone. You never know what the banker, or the lawnmower manufacturer might be able to teach you.
